Cinema a la fresca: Montjuic! 05/07/2010

The screen on Montjuic

The crowd/feild

In america, there's something called a drive-in movie. You know, big movie screens, sit in your car, listen to the movie play over the radio, etc. Well, here in Barcelona, they do a kind of similar thing, except instead of playing the movie in an abandoned feild, they have it on top of a gorgeous mountain that has one of the best views of the city with the screen hung upon on the wall of a castle from the 1600's. Needless to say, it is a little bit more romantic here in Europe.
In fact, I would say that this would have been a PERFECT date night. After catching a bus from plaza espaƱa, you drive up the windy roads on the mountainside until you finally reach the cinema - a huge open field situated against the wall of the castle where the screen plays the movie. Not only was the atmosphere fantastic - people picnicing, drinking champaign and smoking porros, but there's even live music beforehand! (note: the band's name was 'the leap froggie-frogs'...I never said the music was good!) They played a short spanish film that lasted about 15 minutes, and then finally on to the main film! The movie I saw was called 'In search of the midnight kiss' and, as you can probably tell, it was in english! Thank goodness too because unless you bring a chair or get there early enough to get a good spot, you'll probably only being seeing about half of the screen at any given time, so subtitles would have been difficult.
All in all, I would do this again, but only if I had a date - it's a little depressing when the lights go on afterwards and you realize you're the only one who's face isn't buried in someone else's, but, if you find yourself in this position like I did, use it as an opportunity to run to the bus stop and catch the bus before the line gets too long!
